Burdens Environmental seminar oversubscribed!
Just 15 months after Burdens Environmental was launched, the initiative is clearly going from strength to strength. Following the success of its first one-day seminar last autumn at Bristol Zoo, the second seminar entitled 'Delivering sustainable construction' – held recently at the Eden Project – was oversubscribed.

Seminar Presentations from Biomass Energy to Sustainable Drainage

Brian Murphy and Neil MayThe day began with a talk on low-carbon buildings by Neil May Chairman of the Good Homes Alliance. Next to speak was Brian Murphy on specification for sustainable construction. ‘Biomass energy’ was Chris Hughes’s topic, looking at biomass boilers and CHP, fuel supply and availability, and integration of a biomass installation with other technologies. The final speaker of the morning was Geoff Poole, highlighting the use of permeable paving as a sustainable solution to managing water on site.

 

Trade Stsnds

After a lively lunchtime debate on whether sustainable construction should be viewed as a luxury or a necessity, Alex Stephenson, Convenor of the British Water SUDS Focus Group and Chairman of the UKRHA’s Industry Liaison Group, spoke on ‘Sustainable drainage – it doesn’t have to be difficult’. Next, renewable energy was Mike Moseley’s topic. The final speaker was Ian Glover who focussed on renewable technologies in the new-build environment.

Practical Demonstrations

As well as the spoken word, there were practical demonstrations of anaerobic digestion systems, high thermal value and breathable block construction, sustainable urban drainage systems, and environmentally friendly cleaning solutions.
