Rainwater Harvesting on a Pallet

Increased demand for domestic rainwater harvesting kits
Rainwater harvesting systems are being specified on a large number of new builds and help developers reach Code For Sustainable Homes standards for water consumption. A rainwater harvesting system will also offer the following benefits:

  • Rainwater harvesting can save large volumes of water reducing the requirement on water authorities water reserves
  • Reusing water at its source reduces the risk of flooding
  • A rainwater harvesting kit can be installed in new builds and existing buildings
  • Harvested water can be used for non potable purposes; flushing toilets, watering gardens, washing cars and in washing machines.
  • Rainwater harvesting helps control surface water drainage and works as a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS)
  • A rainwater harvesting system can add value to your property. Read more info...

How do rainwater harvesting systems work?
Rainwater is collected typically from the roof or in some cases at ground level via a hard standing permeable paving system. Water is then filtered and stored in the tank until required.

Sizing a rainwater harvesting tank
Burdens Environmental offer a range of tanks to suit both domestic and commercial applications.  We can help you with sizing your tank. To help us please provide the following basic information: The surface area of your rainwater catchment area either roof, hard standing or both, the pitch of the roof and the optimum number of residents. It’s important to note that if 2 people live in a 5 bedroom house although only 2 people may require water, there is a potential for increased consumption requirements so please allow for the optimum number of residents.

Grants & Funding
There are no government incentives or grants for domestic rainwater harvesting kits at present. Commercial premises can qualify for a 100% capital allowance.

Grey Water Recycling
Grey water recycling uses waste water from showers, baths, water butts and sinks, although kitchen sinks are excluded due to the potential nutrient rich element of the waste water. Recycled grey water can be used for flushing toilets and garden irrigation. A combined rainwater and grey water harvesting system can provide substantial water saving.
